Usually shaving your dog down, to help it beat the heat, is not a bad idea. As with anything, you want to make sure to do your homework. You could have a life long effect on your dog if you don't. If you know what you're doing, you should be able to get clippers from any local pet supply store. Otherwise, you want to take your dog to a local groomer. Again, make sure you do your homework on this. You want to talk to the groomers previous clients, see their facilities, and make sure they know what they are doing.

Keep in mind, there are always pros and cons to everything in life. Being man's best friend, as we get more active in the summer, so do they. Swimming would be a big reason to shave your dog, faster drying time, less matting, and best of all, helps your dog warm up more quickly after a nice cool swim. If your dog is just all-around active, less dirt gets caught up on shorter coats. Dogs like to run, jump, play and romp, anywhere, they don't care about clean. Less fur, means less dirt.

The most important factor to keep in mind is that your dog's coat is it's natural protection from the elements. A dog's coat protects it from the suns rays, cold, rain, bugs, and so much more. If you take away a dog's coat, you can even make it feel insecure without it's protection against the world.

Another important aspect to consider is, will this have a permanent effect? Different dog breeds have different types of fur, and sometimes the fur doesn't grow back the same, or at all.

I would take your dog into a groomer. Depending on the breed of dog, it may not be wise to trim their fur too much. However, most breeds, it is fine, you just need to be careful of sun exposure on their skin, and the resulting sun burn. In my opinion, it is best to leave some length to their coat, to prevent the sun from burning their skin too much, if at all.

Most of the time when you trim a dog's coat, it makes them look young. You will have less shedding, because the fur will be shorter and easier to maintain. Also, if you quickly run a brush through your dog's fur everyday that should decrease the shedding.
